Hammersmith United Charities

Gloucester House development

On 3 March, Hammersmith United Charities received planning consent for their plans to add 24 new, almshouse flats on their Sycamore Gardens site. 20 new flats will be built in what is now Gloucester House, the Charity’s closed care home. Of these 20 flats, 6 will be fully wheelchair accessible, 2 will be two bedroom and 12 will be one bedroom flats. The new Gloucester House will also contain a large community room, a residents library and computer suite. The full height atrium and entrance and all areas of the building will be fully accessible, there will be a treatment room in case specialist facilities are subsequently needed by any residents and a guest flat. Four flats will also be added to the existing Sycamore House building in areas now occupied by the Charity’s offices, the guest room and communal lounge and scheme manager’s office.

Funding for the building will be partly provided by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), who have agreed a grant of £1.75m to help with construction. The HCA is the Government’s national affordable homes agency. The HCA (formerly the Housing Corporation) £8.4 billion investment programme for 2008-11 is its biggest ever and is set to fund over 155,000 affordable homes in that period.

Work is due to start before 31 March 2010 and be completed around June 2011.
