Staff and Residents Welcome the Olympic Torch in Shepherds Bush - July 27, 2012
Thursday 26th July saw the Olympic Torch flaming around Shepherds Bush. Some residents, with Cathy, our Sycamore House Scheme Manager saw the Torch streaking by as it came over Holland Park Roundabout and past Westfield. Other staff members celebrated the Torch’s arrival in our area of benefit from a vantage point at the Church of St. Stephen and St. Thomas on the Uxbridge Road.
There was an overwhelming sense of community and high spirits; strangers were talking to each other, people were helping each other and there was a definite sense of community pride.
St. Stephens laid on quite an event with a bouncy castle for the little ones and free bottles of water and cake bites for anyone who wandered by. Later that evening they hosted a party and tonight they are showing the opening ceremony on a big screen, having a barbeque and inviting people to have their photograph taken with the Torch (as the Vicar – Rev Dr Bob Mayo – happened to be one of the Torch bearers).
Unfortunately we were all too excited to get a photograph of the torch as it whizzed by! We are working on it though. Watch this space.
