David Murphy
Relief Scheme Manager
David’s first career was in African agriculture with a special interest in small scale or peasant farming. That career lasted from 1958 to 1985 including training. He has worked in Malawi, Ghana and Zambia. In 2002, he established a small agricultural project in Northern Malawi as a sort of “Thank You” for the many fascinating years that he had worked in central Africa. Others have expanded the project to include primary education, the support of orphans and relief in need.
David started his second career in sheltered house in 1988. He worked for Hyde Housing Associated for 13 years and he has now worked for HUC for just over 4 years. During that time he has done many formal training courses but learned much more by listening to sheltered residents. In many ways he finds his current work at HUC to be the most enjoyable.
Both careers involve working with individuals and small groups. He has developed a particular interest in the State Benefits System and the informal befriending needed to help people who usually have problems in addition to their need for state benefits. He is now 75 years old and hopes to stay a little longer at HUC and eventually maximise his skills in claiming benefits for himself!
