Sycamore House
The original Sycamore House, in Sycamore Gardens, was built in the 1950s to provide 40 flats on land bought on favourable terms from Hammersmith Borough Council.
That building was officially opened on 9th June, 1955 by H.R.H. The Duchess of Gloucester. Later, in the mid 1980’s, the 24 bed-sitting room flats (bed-sits) were converted to provide one bedroom units with a separate sitting room, to match the other 16 original flats.
In March 2012 a new building providing 20 high specification flats was opened and a further four flats were formed from areas originally used as the charity’s offices and from the original residents’ lounge.
Currently, Sycamore House has 52 flats, a guest flat, a residents’ lounge, library and internet access, and a laundry.

Lydia Gandaa, Director of Bubble & Squeak, explains, “The children were shocked to find out how much food was being wasted. They asked Waitrose and Marks and Spencer’s if they could collect any food that would otherwise have been thrown away. They also pitched what is now the Mayor’s Fund for London and won £1,500, which they used to set up a weekly food stall in the school playground. East Acton/Old Oak is a highly deprived area, so it was about supporting the families that live locally to access healthy, quality food that would have otherwise gone to waste.”
The job market is extremely challenging at the moment. For people with a disability, it can feel almost impossible to find work.
