Flats are now available in our almshouses
If you think you might be eligible, we'd be happy to give you a tour of our almshouses and share what it's like to live here.
We have two sheltered housing schemes in Hammersmith. They’re on Rylett Road and Sycamore Gardens – near bus stops, shops, cafés, health facilities, and community services. Both have beautiful communal gardens, a busy social calendar, daily welfare checks and accessible buildings, and they’re protected by a trust so they can only ever be used for housing.
One of our Sycamore Gardens residents, Del, says, “They’re lovely people here. The staff are great. The best thing is you have your privacy, but the company is there if you need it. I am the quiz master here every Thursday. The residents get together after our coffee morning, and we have a good laugh.”
We’re inviting local older people in need of sheltered accommodation to look around our flats, communal areas and award-winning gardens, and to have a chat to staff and residents. Anyone is welcome to come to have a look around – including health and social care professionals who want to visit on behalf of someone else.
“We’d really love people to have a good look around and chat to our staff,” says Hammersmith United Charities CEO Victoria Hill. “I’m so proud of our almshouses and gardens and think we have a really welcoming community where people can live safely and independently. But don’t take my word for it – come along and see for yourself.”

The job market is extremely challenging at the moment. For people with a disability, it can feel almost impossible to find work.
Miracle Brews
Recognising the difficulties that families face, Jamal came together with other Hammersmith parents to launch Somali Parents. Meeting demand is an ever-increasing challenge for the charity. Jamal is the only paid staff member, and he only works for the charity part-time. Nevertheless, assisted by a team of volunteers, the organisation offers support to families across the borough.
Somali Parents runs healthcare workshops about cancer symptoms and support available, as well as drop-in sessions to help ease concerns amongst the community and give people a better understanding of how to access NHS services and what to expect from an appointment. Recognising that women often feel more comfortable discussing health issues with another woman, the charity will sometimes bring in a Somali-speaking female GP to answer questions from the audience and talk to people in private if they need more advice.
“The relationship is the intervention.”
